Students can receive free training in a 5-week course to become an arborist for wildlife fire prevention through the Utility Line Clearance Arborist Training program at Folsom Lake College.

Additionally, the program includes preparing students for interviews and building resume skills, and an opportunity to participate in small job fair with local arbor companies. The average starting wage is $22 an hour.

The program was developed after PG&E reached out to the California government in June 2019 wanting to train and hire 3,000 arborists for utility line clearance, so there are a lot of employment opportunities.

For students interested in outdoor, hands-on work, with high-earning potential and quick entry into the field, this program is ideal.

In the program, students will learn about general safety, equipment fundamentals, aerial work, aerial lift basics, tree and shrub identification and tree climbing basics.

Requirements Needed Before Applying

  1. Students must be 18 years or older.
  2. Students must be aware of safety, able to carry 50 pounds, able to walk long distances, climb trees, wear heavy equipment and handle working in extreme weather conditions and noise.
  3. Students must be able to communicate in English.
