Puente Project

To qualify for Puente, students must:

• Intend to transfer to a four-year college/university
• Eligible to take ENGL C1000 (formerly ENWR 300)
• Eligible to take ENGL C1001(formerly ENGWR 301)
• Eligible to take HCD 310
• Commit to attending Puente Events and activities

English

Puente students take two consecutive writing classes, ENGL C1000 during the Fall semester and ENGL C1001 during the Spring. These classes provide a supportive and stimulating environment for Puente students to build confidence in their writing skills through an exploration of the Mexican-American/Latine experience.

Counseling

Puente students work closely with their Puente counselors from onboarding until the time they graduate. The Puente counselor monitors student progress towards transfer readiness and supports student success through HCD 310 class that focuses on college success strategies, developing student education plan, leadership development, and career exploration.

Mentoring

Puente students are matched with a mentor who is a professional and has gone through the process of completing a higher degree. Mentors share their knowledge and experiences with Puente students and provide a window into “real-life” work environments. The network of trained Puente mentors provides many resources for Puente students, their families, their colleges, and the community.

Puente Bienvenida
The Puente Bienvenida is the kickoff event of the year, welcoming all new first-year Puentistas. Students have the opportunity to network with peers, enjoy lunch, learn about Folsom College resources and services, take a guided campus tour, and hear about upcoming events planned for the year.

Motivational and Transfer Conference
A one-day student conference which brings together all first-semester Puentistas throughout Northern California for a day of community building, workshops, and campus tours, with a goal of motivating academic success and university transfer. The conference is hosted by the Puente Project state office and takes place at a different university each year.

Noche de Familia
Puente’s Noche de Familia is an annual back-to-school event where students bring their families, friends, and supporters to campus. The evening includes a student project showcase, introductions to faculty and staff, and a keynote from one of the authors featured in the course curriculum. It's a time to build community and share the college experience with loved ones.

University Trips
Puentistas and their Puente Coordinators visit universities throughout the year to learn about transfer opportunities, services and resources available, campus life, and learn about the local community surrounding the university.  

Puente End of Year Celebration
The End of Year Celebration honors the accomplishments of Puentistas. Where students bring their families, friends and supporters to celebrate with the campus community and mark the end of a successful academic year, and cheers on graduating and transferring students.  

FLC is seeking local professionals with a bachelor’s degree or higher to mentor students in our brand-new Puente Program.

• Impact: Build vital social and cultural capital for college students as a career role model.
• Commitment: 15 to 18 hours total over the academic year.
• Training: All mentors receive training and guidelines before getting started.
