Help Us Help Students on #GivingTuesday
November 13, 2020
Food and housing insecurity have no zip code, no age, no face, no season. When the Coronavirus pandemic hit in March of this year, campuses closed, students lost their jobs, and many faced the difficult decision of staying in school or paying their rent. For an untold number of students, they had nowhere to turn.
To serve our students, the Los Rios Colleges (Folsom Lake College, American River College, Cosumnes River College, and Sacramento City College) and the Los Rios Colleges Foundation combined resources and embarked on a comprehensive campaign to raise funds to address our students' basic needs. By October, through the generosity of our faculty, staff, community, and corporate partners, 160 students received Student Emergency Fund grants totaling $102,415, and $34,000 was transferred to the campus Cares programs to provide grocery store gift cards and hotel stays for homeless students.
Eight months into the pandemic, efforts continue to help students at FLC. One student shared, “I am extremely grateful for these gift cards. It means the difference between being able to afford groceries for my family this week or not. Thank you.” Another said, "Thank you all very much from the bottom of my heart for helping us students in a time of uncertainty. These times are challenging to many of us. But thank you all for making this possible and helping our community out in a huge way. ...This money will help supply food and necessities for me and my daughter. Words cannot explain how grateful I am."
On # GivingTuesday, Tuesday, December 1, we ask you to make a gift to the Falcon Cares Program. Donations will continue to provide resources to FLC’s students that could mean the difference in feeding their children, paying their rent, or staying in school.
Donating on #GivingTuesday is easy! You can make a gift online or mail a check to campus (Folsom Lake College, Attn. Foundation, 10 College Parkway, Folsom, CA 95630).
“This has been a challenging time for our students, but they have been very appreciative of the resources and support that Folsom Lake College and the Falcon Cares program have provided. I'm grateful that the college can be a ray of hope for our students in the midst of a lot of uncertainty and change.” - Kellie Sims Butler, Ph.D., Dean of Student Services
Thank you for all you have done, not just during the last eight months, but in all of your time as a supporter of Folsom Lake College. YOU can be the reason an FLC student laces up their shoes and chooses to remain on the path of education.
#GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Student Food Cabinets
#FOODforFALCONS serves any FLC student with food insecurity. In addition to the direct distribution of food, the program aims to educate students about additional community resources that address hunger and nourishment.
There are scholarship opportunities for all students and the funds do not have to be repaid!
