Folsom Lake College Honors American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month

American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month

In November, we observe American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month. It is a time to honor the sovereignty, traditions, languages, resilience, and land stewardship practices of American Indian Tribal Nations. It is also an opportunity to recognize Folsom Lake College's ongoing relationship with local Tribal Nations and to consider how the Greater Sacramento region's history is the story of land dispossession, genocide, and harmful policies. It is a time to acknowledge the realities and lived experiences of present-day Tribal citizens not only in this region but also across the United States.

FLC takes this moment to share and reflect on the official college Land Acknowledgement Statement, which has been carefully crafted in consultation with local Tribes to pay respect to our Tribal Nations:

"We respectfully acknowledge the land currently occupied by Folsom Lake College as the traditional home of the sovereign Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok peoples who have a unique and enduring relationship stewarding this land since time immemorial. Despite colonization, occupation, and genocide, the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people continue and thrive in their resilience and self-determination. We celebrate and recognize our Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok tribal neighbors and honor their sustained existence."

This month and throughout the year, we are committed to honoring Tribal sovereignty and to continuing our work to establish and maintain legal and ethical relationships with local Tribal Nations. We also voice support for our American Indian and Alaskan Native students and employees. In addition, learn more about support and resource available through FLC's Native American Student Support & Success Program (NASSSP).
