Rhetorical analysis essays can be difficult because they ask you to think in a way that you may not be used to. Rather than focusing on the meaning of a text (including ads, social media, speeches etc. not just books), or what a text is “about,” a rhetorical analysis asks you to focus on its effects, on what it makes the audience feel and do. An ad might make you angry or sad, a book might make you confused or leave you wanting more, and the focus of a rhetorical analysis is therefore on how texts pull this off, on how texts affect you in these ways. In this workshop we will go over what makes a good rhetorical analysis paper by understanding the relationship between what a text says and how it says it.
