SGVT 300 Introduction to Student Government

This class provides a study of the legal, educational and philosophical basis of student government. The course may include travel to other campuses, area and state conferences, and provides the opportunity to participate on faculty and administrative committees. Topics are designed to teach leadership skills and to give practical experience in the field of student government. Access to a current copy of Robert's Rules of Order, and the Ralph Brown Act will be required.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • recommend appropriate advocacy strategies using acquired knowledge of Title 5, Parliamentary Procedure, committee structures and campus resources.
  • develop and evaluate effective leadership skills which may include critical thinking, problem solving, effective meeting planning and facilitation, time management and budgeting.
  • demonstrate and assess interpersonal skills which may include goal setting, stress management, motivation, active listening, and group participation.
  • demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills in interpersonal, group, and public formats.
  • appreciate and encourage diversity and inclusion in student life and governance.
  • analyze and create a budget for student organizations.
  • organize a variety of campus activities.
