Train as an Arborist

Are you looking for an outdoor career with great pay?
This 200-hour training will introduce trainees to best practices in Utility Vegetation Management and allow graduates to start earning $25.00 per hour.
This training is designed to enhance the understanding and application of safety, integrated vegetation management, tree identification, tree biology, proper pruning techniques, safe equipment operations, tree climbing techniques and customer service.
Certifications are at no-cost to you.
Folsom Lake College offers two trainings related to arborist work:
- 5-Week Utility Line Clearance Arborist Training (ULCAT)
- 2-Week Utility Vegetation Management Level 1 Pre-Inspector (UVM-PI)
- Commitment to follow Folsom Lake College student conduct and rights, to be respectful of instructors and fellow trainees, to show up on time for every class, be ready to learn and participate in class, and plan to study after class.
Two late shows or no shows will disqualify trainees from the program. - This program is funded by grants which will require trainees to participate in surveys. Data collected will include information on your income, size of household, demographics, employment, your use of state and federal social services, and other personal information. Data is sent via a secure server and is used for the purpose of understanding participant demographics and improving the program. All participants are required to complete every survey.
- 18 years of age or older with a current drivers license.
No high school diploma or GED is required.
Trainees Will Receive Certificates In:
- Flagger
- OSHA 10
- Electrical Hazard Awareness (EHAP)
- First Aid and CPR
- Hands-on training includes:
- Utility Arborist ANSIZ133 Safety Standards
- 3-Way Safety Communications
- Utility Best Management Practice (BMP)
- Tree Identification and Biology
- Tree Climbing and Work Positioning
- Aerial Lift Operations (Bucket Truck)
- Chainsaw Safety Operations
- Chipper Operations
- Commercial Driving and Safety
Equipment & Attire
- All supplies will be provided, including gear and learning materials.
- Wear boots, long pants (jeans), and a working shirt.
- Full-time, hands-on training
- 5-week commitment
- Monday through Thursday
- 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Free parking passes provided on the first day of instruction.
Training Dates
Next ULCAT training will be September 29, 2025 to October 30, 2025.
