Overview
Folsom Lake College's theatre arts program provides a broad foundation in various aspects of theatre including history, diversity, and production. Students have the opportunity to learn the basics of acting, theatre design and technology, and an overview of the historical and social context of theatre. Additionally, this program exposes students to core principles and practices in the field. Students gain real world experience in an on-campus performing arts facility, the Harris Center for the Arts.

Associate Degree for Transfer
A.A.-T. in Theatre Arts
The Associate in Arts in Theatre Arts for Transfer Degree program provides students with a major that fulfills the general requirements for transfer to the California State University. Students with this degree will receive priority admission with junior status to the California State University system. Students should work closely with their Folsom Lake College counselor to ensure that they are taking the appropriate coursework to prepare for majoring in Theatre Arts at the institution they wish to transfer to because major and general education requirements may vary for each CSU and the degree may only transfer to specific institutions.
This program has the following completion requirements:
(1) Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following:
(A) Cal-GETC the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) Requirement.
(B) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
(2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
All ADTs also require that students must earn a "C" or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is also an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.

The program in technical theatre prepares students for an entry-level career in technical theatre arts. Career options include roadhouse stagehand, rigger, audio engineer, scene shop technician, scenic artist, property artisan, electrician, costume technician, or stage manager.

This course focuses on the relationship of theatre to various cultures throughout history, and on the contributions of significant individual artists. This non-performance course introduces students to the history and contemporary importance of diversity in the American Theatre. This class will explore the artistic contributions and experiences of diverse groups, including Asian/Pacific Americans, Black/African Americans, Latinx Americans, Native Americans, and multi-ethnic groups. The course will also cover the socio-political events and contexts that influenced these theatrical practitioners, works, and movements. The historical references and significance of various playwrights will be deconstructed. Theatrical works studied will include themes of race/racism, oppression, class struggles, gender roles and identity, and stereotypes. Topics include the basic elements of lamps and fixtures, electricity, dimmers and control consoles. It also covers the design elements of color, distribution, and space to produce a lighting design. Topics include concepts of trade unionism and the function and services of the various professional unions involved in theatrical and motion picture production. This course covers contemporary methods of motion picture production, including low-budget cinema, with a concentration on the aesthetics of motion pictures. Stressed are techniques of direction, lighting, photography, editing, and other aspects of the motion picture theatre arts. This course provides an introduction to the basic theory, terminology, and practice of motion picture production as applied in feature films, and films made for television and internet through developed skill sets, and teamwork in pre production,production, and post-production processes. This is a basic introductory course in narrative script writing for film and episodic television. There will be an emphasis on basic screenplay structure, characters, conflict, theme, and technical script formatting in the development of a short screenplay. Students will view and analyze motion pictures, participate in exercises and workshops, and plot a feature-length professionally formatted screenplay.

This honors course offers a rigorous study of the artistic, historic, and cultural elements of modern cinema, emphasizing critical analysis of film as an art form and product of society, beyond that offered in TAFILM 300. It examines components of movie making, such as acting, directing, cinematography, writing and editing. Film making techniques are analyzed, along with the impact and influences of motion pictures and the movie business. This advanced level course will involve an increased depth of study. Thus, examinations and papers will be graded rigorously. Students will also be required to complete at least two term papers in which they research and critically analyze films, using MLA citation methods. Honors students will also read extensive analytic essays, and complete rigorous projects and oral presentations. Students may only receive credit for TAFILM 300 or TAFILM 480, not both. This course is not open to students who have successfully completed TAFILM 300.

This course is the first of four courses that provides a workshop training experience for students working in their first position on the production crew of a repertory and touring production. Students interested in technical work interview for positions in stage management, crewing, set construction, costumes and makeup, lighting and sound, box office and publicity. Students will gain practical experience in applying production responsibilities in any of the following: stage management, house management, construction, scenery, scenic painting, properties, costume, lighting, sound, video/projections, and running crews.
