Overview
The Folsom Lake College music curriculum includes vocal and instrumental components, as well as courses on music and music history. The curriculum in music is designed to provide students with a foundation in music to gain an appreciation of, and an interest in, pursuing music as a hobby or career.

Associate Degrees for Transfer
A.A.-T. in Music
Completion of this degree provides a basic foundation in music. Program offerings include course work in music theory and aural skills, applied instrumental and vocal instruction, and ensemble performance.
The Associate in Arts in Music for Transfer provides students with a major that fulfills the general requirements of the California State University for transfer. Students with this degree will receive priority admission with junior status to the California State University system.
The Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) student completion requirements (as stated in SB1440 law):
(1) Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following:
(A) The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CAL-GETC).
(B) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
(2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
AA-Ts also require that students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is also an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.

Enrollment Process
Eligible students are selected for the program according to the following steps:
- Pass audition for MUIVI 420 (given the 1st week of classes.)
- Pass music literacy test (given the first day of MUFHL 400.)
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
- perform harmonic analysis of musical compositions and scores including advanced harmonies with borrowed chords, secondary dominants, chromatic mediants, higher tertian, augmented 6th chords and harmonic modulation.
- perform music on 1 primary instrument/voice at a level appropriate to the area of specialization.
- perform critical analysis of musical performances.
- demonstrate advanced aural skills in rhythmic, melodic and harmonic dictation and sight-singing.
- understand, identify and recognize the elements of music including melody, rhythm, harmony, formal structures and cadences.
Career Information
Individuals with four-year degrees in music may teach in the K-12 educational field as well as perform in professional music ensembles, direct religious and community music groups, instruct in private music studios, compose for media and publishing, engage in music entrepreneurship endeavors, and serve as administrative staff for music organizations. Advanced degrees in music may lead to careers as educators at the college or university level, performers, music directors, music editors, ethnomusicologists, and music journalists.

This program is designed to prepare students for the multiple musical and business skills required in the modern music industry including live-performance, self-producing audio and video recordings, touring, merchandising, marketing and promotion. It also prepares students to integrate emergent technologies into their music revenue models and to monetize musical products and services through internet applications.

The Commercial Music, Entrepreneurship Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree may be obtained by completion of the required program, and either (a) the Local General Education Pattern or (b) the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC), plus sufficient electives for a total of at least 60 units. Enrollment Eligibility
To be eligible for enrollment in the program, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Complete an audition for Applied Music prior to the 1st semester of enrollment.
- Meet eligibility for enrollment in MUFHL 400 by taking MUFHL 321 (offered each summer) or passing the challenge exam.
- Enroll in an ensemble course (MUP series) each semester of enrollment in the program.
Enrollment Process

- Contact Music Dept. Chair to schedule audition for MUIVI 420.
- Enroll in MUFHL 321 or contact Music Dept. Chair to take challenge exam prior to beginning of Fall term.
- Meet with counseling staff to declare major.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
- Perform/record a variety of solo and ensemble repertoire representative of several different genre.
- Develop a comprehensive marketing plan for a music ensemble or business that utilizes online marketing tools and incorporates multiple revenue streams and expanding areas of geographic impact.
- Produce a 3-track demo recording (audio) incorporating recorded live (human) instrumentals/vocals, digitally sequenced backing tracks and edited using pro audio software applications.
- Produce a marketing video for a musical performance/product/tour for use in online marketing campaigns.
Career Information
Students completing the Commercial Music Entrepreneurship Degree will have numerous career opportunities aligned with the 21st century music industry, the gig economy and the multiple revenue stream model of employment, including (but not limited to): performer, arranger, composer, producer, sound engineer, live sound technician, music agent, promoter, music educator and music business owner.
A.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies: Arts and Humanities
The Interdisciplinary Studies degree is designed for students who seek a greater understanding of disciplines within the arts and humanities. This program is a good choice for students planning on transferring to the California State University or University of California. The student will be able to satisfy general education requirements, plus focus on transferable coursework that relates to a specific major and/or individual interest. This degree will have an "Area of Emphasis" in Arts and Humanities. These courses emphasize the study of cultural, literary, and humanistic activities and artistic expression of human beings. Students will evaluate and interpret the ways in which people throughout the ages in different cultures have responded to themselves and the world around them in artistic and cultural creation and expression (Arts and Humanities). Students will learn to value aesthetic understanding and incorporate these concepts when constructing value judgments (Possible majors at a four-year institution include, but are not limited to: Art, English, Foreign Language, Humanities, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, and Theatre Arts).
It is highly recommended that students consult a counselor to determine the classes within each area that will best prepare them for their intended transfer major.

- run a public address system for live performances in a variety of settings.
- design and build an onstage live sound set-up utilizing mixers, speakers, sub-woofers, monitors, microphones and amplifiers.
- diagnose and address problems with feedback, unwanted distortion, equipment buzzing and other extraneous sound to maximize amplification while minimizing noise.
Career Information
Students who complete the program will be prepared for employment as live sound technicians in concert halls, music venues, theaters, houses of worship, at music festivals and for other events utilizing a public address system.
Commercial Music: Multimedia Music Composition Certificate
This certificate offers training in music composition geared towards gainful employment in the television, film, video gaming, internet and commercial music industries.

Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a mastery of commercial music styles on one primary instrument/voice including demonstrating an ability to improvise solo passages.
- understand key developments in the music industry and the related economic opportunities created by these emerging technologies and revenue streams.
- evaluate the relative advantages of professionally produced audio recordings/media vs. "do-it-yourself" recordings/media and describe the industry applicability of both.
- construct a business marketing plan for a performing artist/ensemble based upon models of expanding local, regional and national industry markets.
- explain the processes of protecting intellectual property in the music industry including song registration, copyrighting original works and trademark registration.
Career Information
Career opportunities include multiple aspects of the music industry including live performance, composition, concert promotion, music marketing, artist management, recording and audio production.
Commercial Music: Performance Certificate
This program is designed to prepare students to embark on industry careers in music performance and/or to transfer to four-year programs with an emphasis in Music Performance.
Due to the MUIVI 420 requirement in this program, students are advised to contact the music department chair and schedule an audition for MUIVI 420 immediately upon enrolling in this program of study.
Additionally, students are required to be enrolled in an FLC performance ensemble each semester that they are enrolled in this certificate program.

This course is conducted in the Music Department's IDEA (Interdisciplinary Electronic Arts) computer lab.

This course provides students with opportunities to develop marketable skills in preparation for employment or advancement within the field of Commercial Music. Course content will include understanding the application of education to the workforce; completing required forms which document the student's progress and hours spent at the work site; and developing workplace skills and competencies. During the semester, the student is required to attend orientation. Students must complete 27 hours of related paid or unpaid work experience for .5 unit. An additional 27 hours of related work experience is required for each additional .5 unit. The course may be taken for a maximum of 16 units. Students should have access to a computer, the Internet, and some computer media such as a USB drive to store data files. Online students must have an email account. Only one Work Experience course may be taken per semester.
