Attendance: As this is a beginning course, attendance is critical to your success, thus roll will be taken and you may be dropped from the course if you miss 3 class meetings without a doctors note.

The Course Math 20 is an arithmetic course and covers basic operations on whole numbers, integers, decimal, and fractions along with applications of skills learned too word problems. The course is intended to increase your ability to do basic operations mentally and with paper and pencil, thus no calculators or tables are allowed. A complete course description can be found in the FLC Mathematics and Statistics brochure or the College Handbook. It is highly recommended that you see a counselor as part of your college planning. All sections and problems from the book will be covered.

Special Note: If your cell-phone rings during a test then you must turn in your test at that time. If your cell phone rings on two separate occasions then you lose your make up privileges. If you answer the phone or you are text messaging on your phone, your highest test during the semester will be recorded as a zero. additionally all rules of the school both behaviorally and academically will be enforced. In attentiveness will be considered a disruption.

Course Objectives

1.To help students develop an understanding of fractions decimals and percentages and how to apply and manipulate the aforementioned

2.To help students develop problem solving skills and technical reading skills.

3.To help students learn how to work and learn in co-operative groups.

4.To give students a fundamentally sound foundation in symbolic manipulation that will increase their ability to be successful in future math classes.

Grading

Letter grades will be calculated based on the percentage of the total points:

A: 90%-100% B: 80%-90% C: 70%-79% D: 60%-69% F: below 60%

The following is an approximate list of the points available during the semester.

Class/Homework -1 point per page-negative points will be given for pages not completed

Quizzes -10 to 20 points, must attend entire class session for credit

Tests -60-100 points each

Final exam ...................................100 points

Student Learning Outcomes

Math 20

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

compute with accuracy problems involving the basic operations of arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, order of operations) on whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
convert numeric information into any of the three forms: fraction, percent, decimal.
solve computation problems involving ratios, proportions, and percents.
solve applied problems involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, proportions, measurement, and percents.
convert measurement units between English and Metric using multiplication, division, and unit fractions.

There will be a quiz almost every class session except on days a test is given. There will also on occasion be a quiz at the end of a class session. If you leave earlier or come late on a day a quiz is given your score will be recorded as a zero. Your lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped (With a maximum of 15% of quizzes dropped) . Homework will checked prior to unit exam will be collected on the day of the exam. At times progress in book will be randomly evaluated Late Homework will not be accepted. If not from book homework needs to have your name, page number, assignment number, and class at the top right hand corner of the page. Quizzes need to have your name the date and class number on the right hand corner of paper. All assignments need to be placed in the order they were assigned. Your homework will be graded for completeness and correctness. One class session at the end of the course will be used for a make -up exam. One and only one test may be made up and only if you scored 70% or above on all other exams. If you score lower on the make up exam you will receive half of the lower score.
