This Social Science Google-Custom Search Engine searches all the Social Science departments at UC Berkeley. The UC Berkeley librarians have targeted 800+ academic, government agency, non-profit, and other web sites that provide high quality, downloadable statistical information and data sets. Emphasis is on data pertaining to the social sciences, health, developing countries, energy, natural resources, and the environment.

About Search Engine- Geography: Includes maps and geographic information about every country and state as well as a vast resource for students and others interested in geography.

Climate Analysis Branch: The CAB of the Physical Sciences Division of the NOAA strives to advance national capabilities to interpret the causes of observed climate variations, and to apply this knowledge to improve climate models and forecasts. Included are research results, experimental forecasts and links to interactive plotting and analysis pages.

Country Watch: Use your Los Rios Library User name and Password to access this site from home because the site is provided by LRCCD. This site offers a variety of information on specific countries including an overview of the country, political and economic conditions, and environmental issues. It also includes wire service stories for each country. This is the best place to start researching a country.  

David Rumsey Map Collection: "The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 15,800 maps online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North American and South American maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia, and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, childrens, and manuscript maps."

Digital Library for Earth System Education: "DLESE supports Earth system science education by providing access to high-quality collections of educational resources, eEarth data sets and imagery, including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings. Support services are intended to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources. Communication networks are provided to facilitate interactions and collaborations across all dimensions of Earth system education."

Earth and Ocean Sciences, Science.gov: "This site is a gateway to government science information and research results and provides a search of over 36 scientific databases and 200 million pages of science information with just one query, and is a gateway to 1,850+ scientific websites. Two major types of information are included—selected authoritative science websites and databases of technical reports, journal articles, conference proceedings, and other published materials."

Earth Sciences & Map Library: This site offers a collection of maps, aerial photographs, a geography collection and internet resources.

Geographic Information System: A Source for Mapping Technology, the GISPortal provides Geographic Information System (GIS) industry information.

Geographic Names Online: This Getty Thesaurus is intended to provide terminology and other information about the places important to various disciplines that specialize in material culture. The TGN includes names and associated information about places. Places in TGN include administrative political entities (e.g., cities, nations) and physical features (e.g., mountains, rivers). Current and historical places are included.

Landsat Program: "The Landsat Program is a series of Earth-observing satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. Since 1972, Landsat satellites have collected information about Earth from space. This science, known as remote sensing, has matured with the Landsat Program."

Library of Congress Country Studies: "A continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. This online series presently contains studies of 100 countries. Countries that were previously in multi-country volumes are now available individually."

NationMaster: "A massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations. NationMaster is a vast compilation of data from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, UN, and OECD.

Nations Online: " The mission of this portal is to give you access to online information about the immense potential of creative power of the cultures of Earth, to views, visions and knowledge of humankind."

National Association of State Chief Information Officers: A directory of State profiles, with state government links, and state statistics.

National Geographic: "Resource for scientific discovery, travel, exploration, photography, maps, and news, featuring multimedia applications, live webcams, and educational tools from the National Geographic Society."

Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Office: "The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) or "NOAA Research" works in partnership with other organizational units of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA Research provides better forecasts, earlier warnings for natural disasters and a greater understanding of the Earth. Our role is to provide unbiased science to better manage the environment, nationally and globally."

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection: Links to maps include special interest, such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease spread, and general interest, which includes continents and regions.

Portals to the World: "Provided by the Library of Congress, Portals to the World contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world. They are arranged by country or area with the links for each sorted into a wide range of broad categories. The links were selected by Area Specialists and other Library staff using Library of Congress selection criteria."

UC Atlas of Global Inequality: "Provides online teaching resources and tools to enable student exploration of global change. Using the Internet, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and digital media to enhance learning in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Health, Technology and Environmental Studies. The Atlas integrates data, maps, and graphs to create an interactive website for accessing and analyzing information addressing global change and inequality."

United Nations Common Database (UNCDB): "UNCDB provides selected series from numerous specialized international data sources for all available countries and areas."

U.S. Gazetteer: "This gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server and obtain census data from the 1990 Census Lookup server."

U.S. Geological Survey Maps, Imagery, and Publications: The USGS provides portals to Geospatial Maps, Geologic Maps, and the online National Map. The imagery on this site includes aerial photographs, satellite images, and image galleries.

USGS Education: California: "This website presents selected examples of maps and educational reference materials about California that are available free on the Web. Note that many thousands of publications exist that deal with California geography, geology, and natural resources and hazards, and many of these can be found with simple topical searches on the Web."

USGS Library: "Materials within the library system include books and maps dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Other materials include a nearly complete set of the various State Geological Survey publications and a virtually complete set of USGS topographic maps."

Weather Underground, Inc.: Go here to get local weather information in the United States and the World.

Wind Energy Resource Atlas: "This atlas estimates wind energy resource for the United States and its territories. and indicates general areas where a high wind resource may exist. This information is valuable to wind energy developers and potential wind energy users because it allows them to choose a general area of estimated high wind resource for more detailed examination."

Institute for Marine Remote Sensing: The IMaRS at the University of South Florida focuses on the analysis of digital data obtained by satellite and airborne sources, and on the development of applications of these data at local, regional, and global scales.

USGS Geo Data Explorer: "Use GEO-DATA Explorer (GEODE) to access, view, and download information from geo-spatial databases containing a broad spectrum of data produced by the USGS and other government agencies."

SeaWeb: This site features information, programs and resources focusing on the major threats to the ocean: overfishing and destructive fishing practices; pollution, uncontrolled coastal development, introduction of invasive species, damming of rivers, destruction of the ozone layer, and global climate change.

Western Water Assessment: The WWA utilizes multidisciplinary teams of experts in climate, water, law, and economics to provide information about natural climate variability and human-caused climate change. The Assessment was created in 1999 and is a joint effort between the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado and the NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory.
